Vitamin D Health Benefits
Vitamin D, which is really a hormone, is often referred to as the "sunshine
vitamin" because its synthesis in the body is activated by the sun's
ultraviolet rays striking the skin. It plays a pivotal role in nutrition by
facilitating the absorption of calcium and promoting bone mineralization,
thus helping to support healthy and strong bones.
Unfortunately, many people do not produce enough vitamin D or get enough from food. This is especially
true for older people, those who are homebound or bed-ridden, and for people
who may not be exposed to sunshine on a regular basis. Some nutritionists recommends
1,000 IU of vitamin D daily, taken with a meal. Food sources of vitamin D
include fortified cereals and milk, eggs, herring, wild Alaskan salmon, and
sardines.
